In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx.
TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxStXaviersMumbai, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxStXaviersMumbai event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
Concept note
The theme of TEDxStXaviersMumbai 2023 - 2024 is “Spectrums- Collaborate, Converse, Create”.
Our theme aims to look at the world beyond binaries, thus bringing together speakers from varied fields and walks of life to inspire fresh perspectives towards the seemingly mundane realities of the everyday. We explore these taken for granted experiences, traversing through the boundless natural world, the mystifying wonders of technology, the sombre questions of equality and inclusion. And finally, we try to find opportunities to imagine and create a more inclusive world, through small steps, everyday.
Spectrum one
The first spectrum emphasises on how we as human beings are always a part of the macro, while simultaneously inhabiting the micro - right from the biggest organisations at the global level, to the smallest interactions with the people you care about, our lives are constantly lived in the space between extremes. It explores the “wonders” of every day existence, be it at the cellular level or to the unfathomable expanse of outer space; as well as how the largest of these structures, which we may not even be conscious about, can impact our thought processes and worldviews.
Spectrums two
The second spectrum in our ideation places the natural world at one end, with the technological world at the other, and the human being in the centre, constantly engaging with the two extremes. Our deep relationship with nature and all that it has to offer allows us to grow, and find sustainable ways to connect with it. In making things that seemed impossible come true, technology finds ways to tweak, or replicate nature, and at times, even dominate it, in possibly destructive ways.
Spectrum three
With technology being one of our focuses, in the transition from human to non human, it then becomes equally important to address who really has access, and who gets left behind in this “race”. Hence, the third spectrum treads along the lines of power. By exploring power and powerlessness, we attempt to see how people and groups in society, gain, retain, and maintain power, and how that determines life chances, mobility, and opportunity for people. We approach this spectrum by looking at inclusion, trying to see what kinds of people get included in or excluded from the “mainstream”.
As we navigate our journey in this 6th edition of our event, we will make our attempt to address every layer of the theme, in praxis, from the range of speaker ideas we include, to how we address our prospective speakers in an email, to how we would execute on the day of the event. Thus, in treading along the pathways of these spectrums, through TEDxStXaviersMumbai 2023-24, we seek to build more comprehensive ways of seeing the world, so that an inclusive society can be demanded, or at least, imagined.
